Hey there, it’s Officiant Lisa. Over my many years of performing hundreds of wedding and elopement ceremonies, I’ve also guided couples who want to self-solemnize.

Self-solemnization ceremonies are simple, but there are a few very important things that wedding planners, photographers and officiants want you to know…

The Chance For Odd Moments

If you just kind of “wing it”, you will likely have some odd moments where you’re not sure what to do. You’re probably envisioning “we’ll just say some vows to each other and exchange rings and it will be beautiful”. But… how will you start? How will you end? How will you do it all in a way that truly feels like a wedding ceremony, a crossing of a threshold in your life together, not just some words that you said to each other. These are the pitfalls that we know self-solemnizing couples easily fall into. It’s the reason that I thought to make this kit in the first place!

Missed Opportunity For Beautiful Emotion And Breathtaking Photos

This is key: If you have those awkward moments of not knowing what to do, it’s probably fine for the two of you because you know each other well, and it’s not like odd moments mean you don’t love each other :) But… if you don’t feel in flow during your ceremony, you won’t relax and really feel your connection and how much you love each other and just how amazing this moment is.

I hear over and over again from photographers about couples who self-solemnized and because they weren’t sure what to do, the mountain photo backdrop in the photos was beautiful but there was no way to capture any gorgeous moments of connection because they just weren’t happening.

Crazy right? Who would think that self-solemnizing could have an effect on how your photos turn out.

The Beauty Of Self-Solemnizing

I don’t want to scare you with the above stuff, and at the same time I do want you to be in-the-know. The beauty of self-solemnizing is that it’s the ultimate expression of the solidity of your love. Just the two of you, together, are creating your ceremony. Just the two of you are taking it into your own hands to facilitate that moment when you officially and legally make a commitment for a lifetime. It is the ultimate romantic adventure. I’m excited for this ceremony that you will create together, and for you to use my kit so that you are able to enjoy yourselves and truly feel your love the entire way through.

Ceremony Design Guidebook

Using the design guide, you can rest confident that you will have a ceremony experience that is full and complete, and that at the end of your elopement day, you will feel truly and profoundly married.

You’ll learn how to start, how to end and how to do I Do’s, Vows and Rings. You can add in other sweet activities like a wine box ceremony, personal love letters and other ideas in the guidebook too. The result is a fun, sacred, beautiful, romantic, simple, relaxing, light-hearted and deeply meaningful ceremony.

Vow Adventure Kit

A collection of date nights and fun activities to write beautiful and conscious commitments. The Vow Kit walks you through everything you need to know, plus there are pre-written examples to choose from, or if you plan to write your own, there is a template to guide you from start to finish.

Marriage License How-To

A complete tutorial to obtain your license, then sign it yourselves or get it signed, and then what you’ll need to do with it after your ceremony.

Readings, Mini Ceremonies & Spiritual Style

I’ve included a Wedding Reading resource - you’ll learn how to use a reading to set the tone for your experience and I’ve included tons of links to my fave readings. There is also a how-to guide on the various optional Mini Ceremonies you might include: hand fasting, wine box, rose exchange, tree planting and more. Plus every couple has their own unique recipe for spirituality, so there is a tutorial on how to weave your Spiritual (or non-spiritual) Style into the ceremony.

Don’t just get married… deepen your love story.

A wedding, even one as simple as an elopement, is a major life passage. The time between engagement and your elopement day is a unique kind of time that happens only once in your relationship. You are no longer “single” or “in a relationship” while at the same time you are not yet married.

An in-between state like this is the coolest time to learn and grow - to recognize where you have been together, to dream about your vision for where you are headed and to recognize the strengths in your relationship that will make the journey incredible.

If you have this kind of reflection in the months before, your wedding day will be SO much more powerful. You will approach the day not only with a ton of romance, but with a clear sense of meaning and purpose too. You will know what it means to have “crossed the threshold” and this meaning is different for every couple.

Ceremony Questionnaire

You’ll answer a Ceremony Questionnaire together which will deepen your relationship as you reflect back on how much you’ve been through and how it’s created a bond strong enough to warrant marriage. You already know this in your hearts, but there’s something so powerful about pulling it all together in one place and recognizing the depth of your history and the work you’ve put in to make your relationship and love something that will last for the long-term.

Sweet Wedding Prep Activities

In the month leading up to the big day, I’ll send weekly emails with fun activities that will guide you to continually return to what is most important about what you want to experience on your day. As you get closer to the date, the logistics can tend to take over and these emails will ensure that you also stay connected to the sweetness between the two of you and what it’s all really about.
